You’ve probably been hearing a lot about ChatGPT lately, as it’s a major disruptor in the field of generative AI language models. Many professionals worldwide are exploring its potential applications, but others are concerned that it may take over their jobs or generate fake science and news. It’s important to note that generative AI is still in its early stages, and as Bill Gates recently pointed out, these concerns will only become more pressing over time. However, Microsoft has pledged to invest $2 billion in OpenAI to support research and development for tools and products that use generative AI for good. Microsoft’s Nuance Communications recently introduced an updated automated clinical note-generation tool enhanced by OpenAI’s ChatGPT-4.

The Dragon Ambient eXperience (DAX) Express tool builds on Nuance’s existing DAX solution, which automates clinical documentation by capturing multi-party conversations with patients and family members. With DAX, physicians can use natural language to talk with patients about their health conditions, and DAX will convert the conversation into clinical notes that follow documentation standards. DAX Express adds OpenAI’s GPT-4 generative AI language model to the original DAX product, enabling it to produce secure clinical notes in draft form in just seconds.

According to a survey by Nuance, implementing the original DAX solution saved seven minutes per clinical encounter by cutting the time needed for documentation in half. Of the physicians who used DAX, 70% fewer reported feeling burned out or fatigued, and around 75% said the solution improved documentation. Additionally, 85% of patients surveyed felt that physicians using DAX were more engaging. Nuance states that DAX Express further improves on the benefits of the original solution.

Nuance and other companies are developing many generative AI applications for healthcare, and DAX Express is just one of them. These solutions from Nuance are part of Microsoft Cloud for Healthcare, which is managed by the AI-driven Microsoft Azure cloud computing platform.
