From introducing the world’s first smart scale in 2009 to reinventing the smart scale into a connected health station in 2022, Withings continues to amaze us with its top-notch consumer electronics devices. The company’s new Body Scan earned three CES 2022 Innovation Awards.

It is not just another smart scale, but an entire health station that offers breakthrough metrics within 60 seconds of standing on the device. The device calculates weight with precision to 50 grams, but it does much more. It detects the percentage of muscle and fat in different body parts. The system also informs the user about potential health risks related to fat distribution in specific areas of the body. The Body Scan also incorporates a 6-Lead ECG using electrodes in the scale and the device’s retractable handle. This is valuable in screening for potential cardiac problems, such as an arrhythmia.

The smart device also uses Sudoscan technology to measure nerve activity which can detect neuropathy (nerve damage) that could be a diagnostic feature for a variety of chronic conditions, such as diabetic neuropathy. Small electrical charges stimulate the soles of the feet and sensors measure the response that this triggers.

Body Scan provides a daily analysis of biomarkers related to common health conditions. Data may be shared with doctors through the Withings app, which integrates with Apple Health and Google Fit. The company offers has a remote patient monitoring system for professionals that integrates with the Electronic Health Record System to eliminate the need to transcribe data/

Body Scan relies on Wi-fi connectivity and has a rechargeable battery that is expected to last up to one year. It automatically recognizes up to eight different users and tracks their data separately. Withings is also working to expand the Body Scan features to include heart rate and vascular age. The latter would offer artery health assessment in an easy-to-understand manner.

Body Scan is awaiting regulatory clearance and is expected to be available in the second half of 2022 at $299.95.
